Confession here: this is the first time I’ve actually made anything for my children from a pattern! *gasp, cough, sputter* Haha, yes, that’s right! Sunni here at Sewing Blue who has sewed countless costumes, changing pads, curtains, and who knows what else has avoided patterns like the plague. I’ve made plenty of things from patterns I created from my boys’ clothing, so I never saw the need to pay extra money for a pattern when I knew I could make something on my own fit perfectly. But you know what? I’m so glad I finally caved in and did it!
Mr. R started kindergarten today, and I realized that although he has many clothes that fit perfectly for this school year, I have not bought or made him anything new, so I figured why not make him and his brother new shirts for this special day? Also, look at the smug face. He’s so proud to be in school!
I found this Jolly Roger Raglan pattern from Patterns for Pirates. The pattern is very reasonably priced, especially considering you get many variations of the same tee for sizes 3m-14. It’s super easy to print and piece the pattern together, and this particular shirt was a breeze to whip up. Good thing since I had just one day to do it (expert procrastinator here)! The fit is also perfect. My boys wear commercial sizes 2T and 5/6 for the most part, and I made a size 2 and 6 for them out of this pattern and they fit great with no modifications. I plan to make many more shirts from this pattern, and since I’ve had such a great experience with this one, I will be trying several other boy patterns from Patterns for Pirates. Maybe these Baby Bear Joggers or the Captain Comfort Jeans, since heaven knows it’s impossible to find Mr. R pants he likes in the store!
Crazy to believe my little boy is finally going to public school. He’s a smart little nut, so I’m hoping he will be challenged enough. His teacher seems wonderful though, so I guess we’ll see how the year goes!
Sew on and enjoy your littles – they really do grow too fast! (Why do you think we’re having another? Gotta get more of that baby lovin’ in!)
